Want a Capsule Wardrobe? 🚫 STOP Doing These 3 Things!

Let’s be honest...

Most “how to build a capsule wardrobe” advice sounds the same.

Stop shopping so much. Stop following trends. Stop buying duplicates.

And sure, those things for sure help.

But they’re not the real problem.

Because if it were that simple, everyone would have Pinterest-perfect closets by now, right?

But the truth is, building a capsule wardrobe isn’t really about organizing clothes. It’s about unlearning habits we’ve built over years — the need for quick fixes, the fear of not having enough, and the constant urge to look outside ourselves for validation or inspiration.

That’s why today I want to go beyond the obvious.

These are 3 deeper things to stop doing if you actually want a wardrobe that feels like you — one that works, lasts, and brings you peace instead of chaos every morning.

1️⃣ Stop chasing quick wins (aka the “new top” dopamine hit)

We live in a world that rewards impatience.

Dinner? Delivered.

Entertainment? Streaming in seconds.

Validation? Just one post away.

So of course we want our closets to feel instantly satisfying too.

That little rush when you hit “add to cart”? That’s dopamine, your brain’s favorite shortcut to happiness. It’s quick, easy, and gone long before your package even arrives.

But building a capsule wardrobe doesn’t work like that. It’s slow, intentional, and honestly… kind of uncomfortable at first. You’ll second-guess things. You’ll buy pieces that don’t end up working. You’ll wonder if you’re getting it wrong.

That’s normal.

Because learning what actually works for your body, your lifestyle, and your personal style takes time, and a lot of trial and error.

You can’t skip that part.

You’ll have moments when you realize a piece you thought you’d love just doesn’t feel right, or when you wear something three times before you figure out why it’s not working.

That’s not failure. That’s information.

Most people try to skip that process, but this is where the magic happens. It’s how you start to really understand yourself, what you love, and what makes you feel like you.

The reward isn’t that five-minute thrill from a new top. It’s the quiet confidence of opening your closet one day and realizing everything in there feels like you.

That’s what lasts.

2️⃣ Stop mistaking “options” for confidence

We hoard clothes because we fear not having “enough.”

But “enough” is a mindset, not a number.

Most of us grew up believing that being prepared means having more. More options, more outfits, more backup plans. We tell ourselves we’re being practical, but really, it’s fear disguised as preparation.

What if I don’t have anything to wear for that event?

What if I gain or lose a few pounds?

What if everyone notices I’m repeating outfits?

So we keep buying “just in case” pieces, thinking they’ll give us freedom. But having 200 pieces doesn’t make you free. It just gives you decision fatigue.

The truth is, every extra piece you don’t need is a small vote of no confidence in yourself. A quiet way of saying, “I don’t trust that I can make what I already have work.”

But you can. And you will.

Because the more you edit your closet, the more you realize it’s never been about the number of options, it’s about how you use them. When you start trusting your own creativity, you stop relying on excess.

The irony is, real freedom comes from limits. They make you intentional. They help you see possibility where before you only saw “not enough.”

Constraints force creativity.

A capsule wardrobe isn’t about restriction. It’s about self-trust. It’s proof that you know yourself well enough to dress for your real life, not your fears.

When you finally trust that you are enough, your closet will be too.

3️⃣ Stop outsourcing your taste

We live in a world that constantly tells us what we should like.

Trends move faster than ever, and it’s easy to lose sight of what you actually love.

So we scroll, we pin, we save, and before we know it, we’re chasing someone else’s version of style. The perfectly curated minimalist wardrobe on Pinterest might look great online, but if it doesn’t work for your lifestyle, it’s not success.

The truth is, no one can tell you what your personal style should be. Not an influencer. Not a trend report. Not even your favorite stylist.

Style is personal. It’s a reflection of who you are, not who you think you should be.

And when you outsource your taste, you lose your voice. You start dressing for approval instead of expression.

A capsule wardrobe only works when it’s built for your real life.

Maybe success for you isn’t owning 30 perfectly coordinated neutral pieces. Maybe it’s opening your closet and feeling calm. Maybe it’s color. Maybe it’s comfort. Maybe it’s finally having fewer pieces, but loving every single one.

Whatever your version is, define it for yourself.

Clarity equals confidence.

And the moment you stop dressing to impress, you'll finally start honoring you.

If any of this feels hard, that’s because it is.

Letting go of old habits, old clothes, and old ways of thinking takes courage. It’s not just your closet you’re editing, it’s your comfort zone.

And I get it.

I’ve been there too.

I once had a home and a packed closet, filled with things I thought I needed to feel prepared, stylish, and safe.

Then we sold everything so we could travel full time, and suddenly, I had to face all the fears I’d been hiding behind those hangers.

What if I didn’t have enough?

What if I missed something I gave away?

What if I got it all wrong?

I had to practice every single thing I now teach. Learning to live with less didn’t just simplify my suitcase. It rebuilt my confidence from the inside out.

That’s why I know you can do this too.

A capsule wardrobe isn’t just a closet goal.

It’s proof that you can let go, simplify, and still have everything you need.

You've got this, girl 💛

Be patient, and be ok with making a little bit of progress every month. Just don't stop.

Do this for your future self. Trust me, you won't regret it.

XO,

Aimara

If your fall trip includes multiple climates — like cozy mountains and sunny beaches, or chilly city mornings and warm afternoons — you’re about to face one of the hardest packing challenges ever. I know, because I’ve done it. I spent three months traveling through Italy (mid-September to mid-December) starting in the north, where it was already crisp and cool by October, and ending in Sicily, where the days were warm but the evenings still chilly enough for Christmas markets. And yes, I did...

You’ve probably seen the buzz.. maybe on Instagram, from a friend who just got one, or during a late-night “are diamonds even ethical?” Google spiral (been there). Lab grown diamonds are everywhere right now. And honestly? They deserve the spotlight. They’re not just a trend. They’re real diamonds (yes, real real. It's actually a pretty cool process), and they’re changing the jewelry game in the best way possible: ethical, sustainable, and in a lot of cases, more affordable. And for me? This...

I still remember the first time I fell in love with long cardigans. It was when I moved to Chicago back in 2014. Picture this: I was going through a messy divorce, had gained some weight, and was figuring out life in a brand-new country in a city where it felt like the wind was trying to blow me straight into Lake Michigan. I was always cold. I needed layers. I needed comfort. And honestly? I needed something that made me feel like me again. Enter: the long cardigan. It was the perfect piece;...
