🌷 Spring cleaning your closet? KEEP these 20 pieces!

Before we get into this, let me say the obvious.

I know I usually show up in your inbox talking about packing lists, carry-ons, and how to make fewer clothes work harder when you travel.

🌎 That’s my world.

I live out of this little suitcase most of the year, and packing light is second nature to me.

But here’s something I don’t say enough:

Every good packing list starts with an easy closet.

And by easy, I don’t mean tiny or perfect or Pinterest-worthy.

I'm talking about a closet that doesn’t require mental gymnastics every morning.

The kind where you’re not:

❌ Pulling out ten tops just to find one that works... if you're lucky.

❌ Layering things that technically fit but don’t look good together.

❌ Defaulting to the same “safe” outfit because everything else feels off.

This happens at home just as much as it happens on a trip.

And spring has a funny way of making that really obvious.

The weather starts getting better. The heavy layers go away. You want to feel lighter, more put-together, more like yourself again — but instead, getting dressed still feels harder than it should.

That’s usually the sign that your closet isn’t missing more clothes. It’s missing the right ones.

✅ Pieces that mix without overthinking.

✅ Pieces that feel right the moment you put them on.

✅ Pieces that you'll keep for years.

That’s what today is all about.

These 20 spring wardrobe essentials aren’t about trends or reinvention. They’re about removing friction so getting dressed feels calmer, faster, and more intuitive.

The 20 spring wardrobe essentials that actually work year after year!

#1 - Cashmere sweater:

This is one of those pieces that instantly makes an outfit feel pulled together, even if you’re just wearing jeans.

Cashmere is perfect for spring because it keeps you warm without feeling heavy or bulky. It’s the kind of sweater you’ll grab on repeat and never regret owning. (it can be a V-neck / crewneck / boatneck / oversized - etc) *even more options here*

#2 - Long sleeve t-shirt:

Not exciting, but wildly important. A great long sleeve tee is what makes layering easy and keeps outfits from feeling too “done.” When the fit is right, it quietly holds everything together.

#3 - Cashmere t-shirt:

Think of this as your everyday t-shirt, just… better. It drapes beautifully, feels amazing on your skin, and somehow makes the simplest outfit look intentional. This is a great example of an elevated basic piece for when you need a break from regular cotton t-shirts.

#4 - Button down shirt:

This is one of the hardest-working pieces in any closet. Wear it tucked, open, layered, tied, or even as a light jacket. It adapts to whatever you need that day, which is exactly why it never goes out of style. (it can be linen, cotton-gauze, cotton or even chambray)

#5 - Sweater vest:

This piece adds texture and interest without asking much of you. It works on its own or layered and instantly makes an outfit feel styled. Minimal effort, big payoff. A recent addition to my wardrobe that I plan to keep for years to come!

#6 - A good pair of jeans:

A really good pair of jeans is the backbone of spring outfits. They balance softer layers and work with every shoe on this list.

When you find your pair, you’ll wonder how you ever dressed without them.

I highly recommend the Bella stretch jeans from Quince - I have them in wide leg and skinny versions. Both super comfortable!

#7 - Wide leg pants:

These are the polished alternative to jeans that still feel comfortable. They instantly elevate simple tops and are easy to wear all day. I have this exact pair in almost every color, which tells you everything you need to know. I don't have to think about new pants for years!

#8 - Pleated or silk midi skirt:

This skirt does a lot without being fussy. It moves beautifully, works with sneakers or sandals, and feels right year after year.

Feminine, practical, and very easy to style. I've had mine for 2 years now and it's still going strong! (I actually have it in 2 colors)

#9 - Striped cardigan:

Stripes are one of those patterns that never really go away. A striped cardigan adds interest without overwhelming your outfits and works across casual and dressier looks. It’s timeless for a reason.

#10 - Long cardigan:

This is your throw-on-and-go layer. It adds softness, gives outfits a little flow, and somehow makes everything feel more relaxed.

>>> Bonus: you can wear it year-round, not just in spring. I recently traveled with this one and it was a true MVP! ⭐️

#11 - Denim jacket:

A denim jacket is one of the most reliable pieces you can own. It works with dresses, trousers, skirts, and casual outfits without trying too hard. I recently got one that’s a mix between a denim and chore jacket and I’m obsessed. (linked here)

#12 - Chore jacket:

If you want something structured but not stiff, this is it. A chore jacket feels intentional without being dressy and works beautifully with basics. Stick to a neutral so it plays well with the rest of your closet.

#13 - Beige trench coat:

This is the ultimate spring classic. A trench coat instantly pulls outfits together and works in so many situations. Short, mid, or long all work — I personally love a shorter one because it’s also travel-friendly and not bulky. (Also, I'm 5'4" and the short one is not that short, so it works for me)

#14 - Rain jacket:

Not glamorous, but very necessary. The key is choosing one that doesn’t scream “outdoor gear.” A stylish, neutral rain jacket keeps you dry and looks good with the rest of your wardrobe.

#15 - Little black dress:

This one never fails. A lightweight black dress is easy to layer in spring and works for everything from casual days to nicer plans. Simple, dependable, and always appropriate. (I have this one and LOVE it so much!)

#16 - Flattering maxi dress:

A good maxi dress is effortless in the best way. It’s comfortable, easy to wear, and instantly makes you feel put together. One piece, zero overthinking.

Quince has gorgeous maxis, but so does this other sustainable brand!

#17 - Jumpsuit:

This is your answer to “I don’t feel like figuring out an outfit” today. A jumpsuit looks styled with almost no effort and works for so many occasions. Easy, polished, done ☑️

#18 - Ballet flats:

Ballet flats soften outfits and make them feel a little more feminine. They work with jeans, most skirts & dresses, and trousers without overpowering anything. Quiet, classic, and always useful.

I've had pairs of ballet flats since I was like 16 (not the same pair LOL - I replace them every 3-4 years). I always wear them so much (just not for travel, that's why you never see me with them)

#19 - White sneakers:

A clean pair of white sneakers goes with almost everything. Dresses, denim, wide leg pants — they just work. Comfortable, practical, and very hard to mess up. If you've been here for a while, you know I rarely travel without these!

#20 - Suede (or leather) loafers:

These are perfect when you want polish without heels. Suede loafers elevate simple outfits while still being easy to walk in. Just keep them away from rain and you’re golden.

Now, I want to pause for a second...

Because if you’re reading this list thinking:

“Okay… but this all sounds very minimal,” you’re not wrong.

These 20 pieces are simple by design. They’re meant to be the foundation. The bones. The part of your closet that quietly does the heavy lifting so the rest of your style can actually shine.

And having timeless basics doesn’t mean your style has to be boring, safe, or one-note.

It just means you get to decide how you show up.

For example:

👉🏼 If your style leans preppy, take something like the striped cardigan or the button-down shirt and lean into that energy. Layer the cardigan over your shoulders, add loafers, tuck the shirt into wide leg pants, and suddenly it feels intentional and polished instead of basic.

👉🏼 If your style is more funky or playful, start with a classic like the trench coat or the jumpsuit and add your twist. A bold shoe, a statement bag, oversized earrings, or a pop of color instantly changes the mood without changing the foundation.

👉🏼 And if your style lives somewhere in between (which, honestly, most of us do), the trick is in the details: cuff your jeans, half-tuck the shirt, roll the sleeves, switch the shoes. Small tweaks go a long way when the base is solid.

That’s the beauty of these pieces.

They don’t tell you who to be.

They give you room to be yourself.

Timeless essentials aren’t about erasing your personality. They’re about giving your style something reliable to build on — so getting dressed feels easier, not restrictive.

Aimara

Okay, I have to come clean about something. This is one of the questions I get most often — "Aimara, your tips are great, but I'm not a size XS. Does any of this actually work for me?" And for a long time I kind of danced around it. Not because I didn't care, but because it's genuinely not my personal experience. I'm a size small, and I didn't want to pretend I had all the answers when I don't. But here's what changed my mind... I watch my husband pack for every single trip we take. He's...

Spring break looks different for everyone... 🇲🇽 Maybe you're heading to Mexico with your girlfriends for a long-overdue trip. 🌴 Maybe it's a family week in Florida or the Bahamas, navigating the beach with kids in tow. 🛳️ Maybe you booked a cruise and you're genuinely not sure how to pack for something that's half resort, half adventure. 😎 Or maybe it's a 4-day long weekend somewhere warm and sunny because honestly? You need it. Whatever your version of spring break looks like, Gordon (the...

Here's a question I get all the time: "Aimara, I want to pack carry-on only… but I need specific beauty products. Like, NEED them. My hair suffers if I switch things up. What am I supposed to do?" I get it. I really do. Your skincare routine works. Your hair products are non-negotiable. And the idea of showing up somewhere with mystery breakouts or dull hair? No thank you. But here's the thing: you can absolutely travel carry-on only and still bring your specific products. You just need a...
